“Exceedingly great and precious promises.”
2 Peter 1:4
From Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening — Morning, July 27
A month or so ago, in the middle of the night, when I could not stop ruminating on my problems, God gave me a formula. One of the steps was to remind myself of God’s character and recite relevant Scripture. Lately, I often feel like God is silent and slow to answer prayer. I ask Him to move, to speak, and to let me hear His voice.
But He has already spoken every fitting and precious promise to me. I need only to open His Word, search for the promises I need, and meditate on them.
“There are promises which are like grapes in the wine-press; if you will tread them, the juice will flow. ”
Not only should I meditate often on the promises, but on the Promiser. God is truth and goodness. All that He has promised will surely come to pass. He is all-powerful — the same God who created the heavens and the earth is the same God who said, “I will never leave you or forsake you.”
He is all-wise. Though it often seems like His favor and His promises are delayed, His timing is perfect, because His ways are not our ways.
If you’re waiting to hear from God today, Spurgeon reminds us: meditate on God’s promises and consider the Promiser, and we will experience their sweetness and obtain their fulfillment.
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for treating Your silence as absence. You have already spoken every promise I need; teach me to search Your Word and meditate on it, and on You, the Promiser, until I know its sweetness and see its fulfillment in Your perfect time. Amen.
