BOOKS & RESOURCES

The following books have helped me through my grief journey.

MORNING & EVENING

Aside from the Bible, if there has ever been a person that has shaped who I am and how I think, it would be Charles Spurgeon. His beautiful word imagery brings biblical truths to life and masterfully paints them in mental pictures so that they are not soon forgotten.

SEASONS OF SORROW

In Seasons of Sorrow, Tim shares real-time reflections from the first year of grief —through the seasons from fall to summer—after the unexpected death of his 21 year old son. He introduces his readers to what he describes as the “ministry of sorrow.” Throughout his book, I felt as though I was reading my own thoughts.

DARK CLOUDS DEEP MERCY

This book seeks to restore the lost art of lament in order to help readers discover the power of honest wrestling with the questions that come with grief and suffering.

HOPE ALWAYS

As a physician and minister, Dr. Sleeth shares his personal and professional experiences with depression and suicide, challenging Christians to become part of the solution. With sound medical principles finding their rightful place beside timeless biblical wisdom, Hope Always offers the practical and spiritual tools that individuals, families, and churches need to help loved ones who are stressed and struggling.

SUFFERING IS NEVER FOR NOTHING

Elisabeth Elliot was no stranger to suffering. Her first husband, Jim, was murdered by the Waoroni people in Ecuador. Her second husband was lost to cancer. Yet, it was in her deepest suffering that she learned the deepest lessons about God.

VALLEY OF VISION

A balm to my soul and words to pray when I can't find my own. I've had this little gem written by a variety of puritans for many years and use it often in my quiet times.

THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS

Often rated as important as the Bible as a Christian document, this famous story of man's progress through life in search of salvation remains one of the most entertaining allegories of faith ever written. Set against realistic backdrops of town and country, the powerful drama of the pilgrim's trials and temptations follows him in his harrowing journey to the Celestial City.

MERE CHRISTIANITY

Lewis, once an atheist, is another favorite writer. I find myself returning again and again to Mere Christianity. It is a brilliant introduction to the Christian faith.

LAMENT FOR A SON

Wolterstorff, a well-known Christian philosopher, lost his 25-year-old son to a mountain climbing accident. His reflections in the wake of that tragedy are at times deeply personal, but always he expresses a prayerful anguish with which most bereaved parents will identify.
